As the sunshine settles in and the days stretch a little longer, it’s the perfect time to refresh the way we nourish ourselves — starting with hydration. While keeping a glass of water nearby is one of the best habits to carry into summer, it’s just as important to eat foods that naturally boost your hydration levels. Especially for older adults or those needing care at home, every sip and bite counts.
Staying hydrated doesn’t have to be a chore — in fact, it can be delicious. From crisp salads to juicy fruits, nature has a wonderful way of helping us stay well during warmer months. Below, we share some of the most water-rich foods you can enjoy this summer — full of flavour, full of goodness, and easy to add to daily meals.
And before we begin, a special mention to our friends at Jelly Drops — cleverly designed sweets made up of around 95% water. They're colourful, full of natural flavour, gluten-free, and especially useful for those who may forget to drink as often. A wonderful option in care.
1. Cucumbers – 96% water
Crunchy, refreshing, and wonderfully hydrating, cucumbers are top of the list for a reason. They're perfect in salads, sandwiches, or even sliced with a sprinkle of salt and lemon. A fantastic source of vitamin C, cucumbers also have anti-inflammatory benefits — a small snack that offers a lot.
2. Celery – 96% water
This fibre-packed vegetable is another hydration hero. Celery is low in calories but rich in minerals that help replenish and balance the body. Easy to chop and dip, or finely sliced into a salad, it’s a great option for warm-weather nourishment.
3. Lettuce – 95% water
Especially the lighter, crisp varieties like iceberg or romaine — lettuce is more than a sandwich filler. It provides vitamin C, folate, and beta-carotene, all helpful for wellbeing. Toss with olive oil and lemon for a quick and hydrating lunch.
4. Courgette (Zucchini) – 95% water
Grilled, spiralised, or stir-fried — however you prefer it, courgette is easy to digest and full of vitamin A, C, and potassium. It's a wonderful side dish or main feature in summer meals.
5. Tomatoes – 94% water
Sweet, juicy tomatoes — bursting with hydration and rich in antioxidants like lycopene. Enjoy them fresh in a salad, sliced into a sandwich, or simply on their own with a dash of olive oil.
6. Watermelon – 92% water
No summer list would be complete without it. Watermelon is more than just sweet and delicious — it’s also packed with vitamin A, C, and essential electrolytes. A cool slice of watermelon on a hot day can be as refreshing as a glass of water.
7. Cantaloupe – 92% water
A cousin to watermelon, cantaloupe (or melon) offers a softer, sweeter alternative. It’s rich in potassium, vitamin C, and great for topping breakfasts or served as a gentle dessert.
8. Bell Peppers – 92% water
Crisp and colourful, bell peppers are rich in vitamins and hydration. They're easy to eat raw as a snack, in a stir-fry, or roasted in the oven. A simple and nourishing addition to your plate.
9. Strawberries – 92% water
These lovely red berries aren't just sweet and summery — they’re also one of the most hydrating fruits around. Packed with vitamin C and antioxidants, strawberries are an ideal snack or topping.
10. Peaches – 88% water
Soft, sweet, and rich in potassium and vitamin A, peaches are a summer favourite for good reason. If swallowing or chewing is a concern, sliced or stewed peaches are a safe, tasty alternative.
Water-rich foods are a gentle, effective way to care for your hydration — especially during hot days when appetites may be lower. Alongside these foods, continue to drink plenty of water throughout the day (around 6 to 8 cups is a helpful guide). Small, regular sips are often easier than large drinks, particularly for older people.
